Discipline a much talked about and controversial value of life, and like life, its meaning has also undergone many changes.
In the modern context, we define or rather relate discipline to ‘order’ and ‘orderliness’. No longer do we define it in terms of our ability of “self-restraint or self control.”The distance between orderliness and self-restraint has gorged deeper and deeper, so much so that to discipline a child today, means to order him into behavior patterns which he would not normally do by himself. The mutating scene has been due to variable factors. With so much exposure to the media of print, TV and other sophisticated means of communication the child is rather perplexed about his behavior.
Added to this exposure is the prevailing atmosphere of enhanced permissiveness with the rise of “Monet Power” and rising economics- materialism, consumerism and other “isms” of like nature, unlimited expectations against limited vision, extreme pressure to perform by means of fair and foul in all probabilities. The traditional values, skills and art and age old customs are being questioned at all levels of society as never before.
Where should we grope for that vision of light, to entangle this intricately interwoven fabric that seemingly is eroding the value structure of human-kind.
